For several centuries, knowledge of the world was made accessible through books that compiled, in particular, the animals of the different countries of our globe. In the 19th century, it was Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny who undertook this fabulous work of compilation.
A botanist and geologist, Charles Henry was responsible for overseeing the publication of a compendium of knowledge: the *Dictionnaire universel d'histoire naturelle* in 16 volumes. This very rich work brought together all the knowledge then available on natural phenomena, agriculture, medicine, industrial arts, and all the wonders of nature. It notably included extremely detailed engravings depicting jungle animals!
