Discovering historical tropical posters

For several centuries, botanical illustrations were an essential way to discover the flora and fauna of distant lands. Drawing was then a formidable tool that allowed the study of plants visible in the botanical gardens of European capitals.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter, engraver, and publisher: from the beginning of his career, he studied plants in the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew, near London. He published numerous works, such as *Histoire des plantes grasses* (1799) and *Liliacées* (1805), whose most beautiful illustrations we invite you to discover. While Redouté primarily drew plants, his British counterpart Mark Catesby wore the dual hat of naturalist and botanist. Thanks to his thirst for travel and learning, readers discovered the fauna and flora of South Carolina: *The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands* was the first illustrated description of the landscapes of North America.

Even today, botanical prints are formidable iconographic treasures, timeless images that we have chosen to revive through a beautiful selection of tropical posters.
