Albert Solon, famous French poster artist
French graphic designer Albert Solon was born in 1897 and rose to fame for his advertising work throughout the interwar period. His career extended into the 1950s, and he is notably known as one of the first poster designers for the airline Air France. This self-taught artist created many advertising images for the company, some of which have become truly iconic. At a time when giant posters displayed in the streets were an extremely important means of communication, his work helped shape the codes of modern graphic advertising.
The style of the posters created by Albert Solon is particularly characteristic of his time: geometric typography, bright colors, straight lines and marked perspectives, etc. Each image illustrates a destination offered by the company. The Balearic Islands and Algiers are represented by a palm tree., whose shape stands out against a rising sun. In another illustration, the cities of sub-Saharan AfricaThose served by air and sea transport simply appear on the outline of the continent, whose contours are drawn in a gradient of yellows.
