Destination Vietnam with the artist Blain

In the 1950s, Air France opened up to the world, and particularly to Asia. As early as 1947, it operated a weekly route connecting Saigon, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, before focusing more on the Vietnamese capital. Now called Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon represented a strategic point for companies like Air France, serving as a gateway to many other Asian destinations.

To highlight this connection with Vietnam, Air France commissioned, among others, the designer Blain between 1956 and 1960 to create original advertising posters. He notably produced the two superb illustrations that we have selected for you.The first one evokes Hanoi., which is one of the most populous cities in the country, and its magnificent architecture. Rather than mentioning the name of Air France, the artist chose to indicate that of Air Vietnam, a company that had just been founded, further inviting travel. The yellow tones in the background evoke the local heat and the green, the Vietnamese jungle.

A second poster shows a dragon., a symbol of Asia, watching over a plane in flight. To represent Air Vietnam again, the artist chose to draw the creature right next to the cockpit, on the plane. It appears as an extension of the initial dragon, facing the sun.
