Kamisaka Sekka, from samurai to traditional Japanese painter
Born into a prominent samurai family in 1866 in Kyoto, Kamisaka Sekka's talent and aptitude for art and design were quickly recognized by his family. He later joined the traditional Rinpa school of art, a Japanese painting style that had been declining in popularity at the time. Faced with this reality, the country decided to capitalize on the world's interest in its traditional art, and in 1901, Kamisaka Sekka was sent to Glasgow, Scotland. There, he became passionate about Art Nouveau and researched the characteristics of Japanese works that appealed to Westerners.
Back in the Land of the Rising Sun, he became a professor at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, where he taught his students traditional techniques while incorporating some things he had discovered in Europe. His personal compositions respect the subjects of the Rinpa style, to which he adds modern and Western details. He uses, for example, bright colors for dazzling effects. Today, he is still considered the last representative of the Rinpa movement, with works that have become mythical. His finest prints are mainly found in his work Momoyogusa, which literally means "A World of Things." Commissioned by the Unsodo publishing house, it comprises 3 volumes and 60 paintings, with varied subjects: characters, landscapes, classic themes or those inspired by his travels.
