Kono Barei, the art of illustrating nature
The painter Kono Barei was born in Kyoto in 1844, under the name Yasuda Barei. His works highlight the beauty of Japanese animals, flowers, and landscapes, with a touch of nostalgia and a rather Western realism. Sometimes a painter, sometimes an illustrator, he is one of the worthy representatives of the ukiyo-e school, a typical current of the Meiji era, and is among the masters of kacho-e painting, dedicated to images of flowers and birds. His Album of One Hundred Birds was published in 1881.
In 1880, Kono Barei opened his own art school, which would welcome some prestigious students, such as Takeuchi Seihō, Tsuji Kakō, Kawai Gyokudō, and Uemura Shōen. A highly regarded member of the Maruyama-Shijo school, he is famous for combining Japanese style with Western realism. The themes of his works are primarily nature, birds, and flowers, depicted in different seasons. Most take the form of woodblock prints, a traditional medium that allows for the creation of illustrations of great delicacy. Kono Barei paid particular attention to textures and colors, creating delicate compositions imbued with remarkable melancholy and romanticism.
