Flowers and animals take center stage in the prints of Ohara Koson
Born in 1877, the painter Ohara Koson began his career by creating prints of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905. This focus brought him a certain notoriety, at a time when traditional representations of nature seemed to be out of fashion. While teaching at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in the early 1900s, an American colleague convinced him to return to prints of flowers and birds, which he did from 1926 onwards.
With the support of the publisher Watanabe Shosaburo, who initiated the Shin Hanga movement of pictorial renewal, the artist created magnificent illustrations, very close to Western watercolors. These illustrations demonstrate his immense attention to detail, particularly in the plumage of the birds.
