The botanical painter Pierre Joseph Redouté was born in Belgium in 1759 and had a successful career. A few years after arriving in Paris in 1782, he embarked on botanical illustration, a field that was then booming. In 1788, he became a protégé of Queen Marie Antoinette, who appointed him the official draughtsman and painter for the Queen's Cabinet. Following the Revolution in 1792, the Academy of Sciences hired him, and in 1798, Napoleon's wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, made him her official painter.

The talented Pierre Joseph Redouté notably had the opportunity to teach at the Natural History Museum of Paris from 1824 and participated in nearly fifty works as an illustrator or publisher. He worked with the greatest botanists of his time, becoming one of the most renowned artists in his specialty. So much so that he received the very apt nickname of "Raphael of Flowers," in reference to the famous Italian painter, due to his mastery of watercolor.
