Toyohara Kunichika

Kunichika Toyohara was a master of 19th-century Japanese woodblock printing, renowned for his portraits of kabuki actors and scenes of urban life in Edo (Tokyo). A pupil of Utagawa Kunisada, he developed an expressive and colorful style, marked by a great modernity in composition and color usage.

His works capture the theatrical intensity and emotions of the characters with a unique vibrancy. As posters, his prints fascinate with their dynamism, their graphic refinement, and their perspective on Japan of his time.
