Reproduction in 3 parts of an oceanographic plate taken from the "Natural history of cetaceans and other marine mammals of the west coast of North America" (1872) by Charles Melville Scammon (1825-1911).
The illustrations in this book were printed using a monochrome lithography technique, the color variations of the animal are achieved by stippling and halftone effects. This image has been greatly enlarged compared to the original work, so the stippling effects are particularly visible and could suggest that the image is pixelated. It is simply the original "grain" of the image which stands out more in large format and this is what gives all its personality to this series of posters.
