While advertising is a very ancient concept, the idea of advertising and posters emerged during the 19th century, a period in which printing processes improved more and more rapidly. Two major milestones were reached in the second half of the 19th century: Jean-Alexis Rouchon invented "wallpaper printing and color printing of posters," while Jules Chéret infused the wall poster with a new, more colorful and dynamic style. This new craze for advertising posters created a real artistic emulation in which renowned artists participated: Bonnard, Lautrec, and Mucha contributed to developing an unprecedented stylistic diversity that made the poster an artistic creation and a historical document.
