Charles Melville Scammon, an ambivalent and talented figure.
A whaler and naturalist, Charles Melville Scammon is best known for discovering the lagoons in whichgrey whaleswere breeding in the 17th century. The most famous are undoubtedly the San Ignacio Lagoon, off the coast of Mexico, and the Laguna Ojo Liebre, which also bears his name, Scammon's Lagoon. As captain of the ship Leonore, he initiated the massive whaling hunt in 1856, almost exterminating the species.
Aware of the ecological disaster triggered by his actions, he published a testimonial book in 1874 entitled The Marine Mammals of the North-western Coast of North America. Primarily scientific, this work contains a large amount of observations and detailed illustrations on whales, but was a commercial failure upon its release.
This complex character was paid homage to in Pawana, by JMG Le Clézio. This title refers to the Native American name for whales, used as a war cry by hunters before attacking the marine mammals. This book portrays Charles Melville Scammon as a tormented man, perpetually torn between greed and guilt. His illustrations nonetheless remain impressively realistic and detailed, which is why the experts at Oneart chose to add several to their catalog.
