Roland-Garros 2005 magnet by Jaume PLENSA
The official 2005 Roland-Garros poster, created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, is one of the most controversial in the tournament's history. For the first time, black dominates the composition, a choice unprecedented at Roland-Garros, intended to pay tribute to the North in contrast to the light of the artist's native Catalonia. In this striking work, tennis only appears in half-tones: no players, no matches, no bright colors. The battle takes place elsewhere, in the tension between day and night, past and present—themes dear to Plensa. Only the text in Old French, taken from Rabelais, connects the poster to the cultural roots of tennis, back when Gargantua played "jeu de paume." This contemporary creation, blending abstract art and literary reflection, marks the Roland-Garros poster series with its symbolic power and resolutely unique approach.
